This week, the creative agency St Luke’s and Outsiders Insight launched ‘Nature demands justice’: a new awareness campaign to get ecocide recognised as an international crime by the International Criminal Court (ICC). Launched on 6 June on social media, the campaign marks the anniversary of the destruction of Ukraine’s Kakhovka dam, which poisoned waterways and laid waste to natural habitats.
‘Nature demands justice’ gives a voice to the wildlife whose habitats are destroyed, depicting them as ‘ICC-esque judges’. Using anthropomorphism, the campaign consists of four poster-style images of vulnerable animals dressed in judicial robes. With this campaign, St Luke’s and Outsiders Insight also want to encourage people to sign the Stop Ecocide petition and help achieve its recognition as an international crime.

It is our hope that the campaign will add to the momentum required to make the International Law Commission change their statute.
